Filson Rucksack
Filson Rucksack

I was looking for a Everyday Carry (EDC) backpack for office, weekend trips and day carry bag for holidays. A few popular brands came up on my mind, Tom Binh, TUMI, GoRuck, Mystery Ranch, NorthFace, Aer, Bellroy and Peak Design. Weighing style, organisation, weight, simplicity, durability and currentness – the Filson Rucksack was at rock bottom in all scales.

It was Filson’s heritage materials and build that bought me over – the rugged twill from England’s British Millerain, brass hardware and bridle leather from Wickett and Craig. The Rucksack came very stiff, twill and leather were well waxed and assured to last a lifetime. Even after a few months use, the bag was still fairly stiff. Having used the Filson Classic Briefcase (256) for 6 years, I know that the twill and leather will soften and a unique patina over time – exactly why I’m excited to use bags made from heritage materials.

What I typically pack in my Filson Rucksack on a weekday to the office: exercise attire, drinks, energy bars, stationery, reading materials, mobile phone gimbal. The Rucksack in black gives less of a casual look for use in the city. The Filson Rucksack comes with two front pockets, a 20L main compartment and a quick access back sleeve means simplicity.

The two front pockets are packed with my EDC – tools, stationery, earbuds – basically things that I want to have quick access to. I don’t usually button the front pockets and definitely don’t have to unfasten the front leather buckles to reach to my EDC.

The 20L main compartment means that I don’t have to worry too much when it comes to packing necessities for a day or two. The Filson Rucksack is my go to weekender bag – big enough yet portable and not bulky. The leather carry straps do not bother me at all, I find them large enough to not ‘eat’ into my flesh as I carry the bag around town.

Many may miss the subtle yet defining detail of this bag – the leather straps that go over the storm flap and fastens at the bottom of the pockets. This allows a blanket, a jacket, a sleeping bag, a large vacuum flask or a wet umbrella to be held outside the bag. While I won’t keep things hanging outside my bag when I am in my own city, I definitely do so when travelling.

In all honesty, the Filson Rucksack is not a bag meant for a contemporary setting. But if you like heritage and don’t mind the occasional compliments of carrying a classic bag, the Filson Rucksack is definitely what you are looking for.
